The touch of a grand piano: Grand Feel III wooden key keyboard mechanism
Taking inspiration from many long-established principles of piano acoustics, the Grand Feel III keyboard action used in the CA701 combines materials, movements, and mechanisms to recreate the exceptional touch of the finest concert grand pianos.
The eighty-eight black and white keys are entirely crafted from long pieces of wood, with finely textured, ivory and ebony-like surfaces to absorb moisture and provide enhanced control. Each wooden key pivots smoothly on a balance pin—the front rises and the back drops down, replicating the familiar rocking motion of an acoustic piano's action. When a key is pressed, its back rises, triggering a graded-weight hammer that strikes a pressure switch. The force applied to this switch is then measured, and the corresponding note is played with authentic tonal character and volume.
In addition to having extended keys made entirely of wood, Grand Feel keyboards also feature one of the longest key pivot lengths, equivalent to that of a Kawai grand piano.
This pivot length helps balance the key's touch weight between the front and back of each key, enabling greater fluidity and better expressive control while minimizing the need to adjust one's technique when using an acoustic grand piano.
The latest Concert Artist instruments come equipped with high-fidelity speaker systems specially designed to reproduce deep bass and crisp highs. The CA701, with its high specifications, features an enhanced 6-speaker output system, where the low frequencies are radiated from beneath the instrument, and the mid and high frequencies are projected outward by top-mounted speakers and forward-facing tweeters. The result is a broad and resonant sound that closely mirrors the immersive sound field of an acoustic grand piano.
